AZM has antiviral, immunomodulatory, and clinical effects in the treatment of COVID-19. At stage 2, AZM can bind to the ganglioside-binding domain of the spike protein, preventing virus binding to lipid rafts.
It also prevents the ligand from binding to the CD147 receptor (antiviral action).
In stages 4 and 5, Azithomicin 500 MG can reduce the production of proinflammatory cytokines, reducing the length of stay and the need for respiratory support while in the hospital (immunomodulatory effect).
Finally, evidence on bacterial species coinfection in COVID-19 patients is scarce. The most typically isolated species include Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Legionella pneumophila, Haemophilus spp., Klebsiella spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Chlamydia spp., S. pneumoniae, and Acinetobacter baumannii.
